This marks the first time
I’m going to be asking this
So if you’ll allow me the honor
Of an honest answer
I would like to ask you
What do you appreciate?
You don’t have to answer right away
Here how about this
You think about it and let it come to you
And while you’re doing that
I will go first as a sign of good faith
Where do I even begin?
I’ll start with something easy
I appreciate the Internet
Reading YouTube, Facebook
And Instagram comments
Are all in a day’s laugh
Sending #selfie Snapchats to my buddies
And reading the newest gossip stories
Have y’all seen Amanda Bynes!?
I appreciate the beach
Nothing beats lying out
On a nice toasty and sunny day
Setting down a towel as your sheet
And molding the sand
To the contour of your body
Making the perfect bed for tanning
And that ocean breeze
Salty, smelly but for some reason
Always will it be refreshing
I appreciate my city
For me it’s the land
Where Angels are born
But make no mistake
There are no pearly white gates
Here you’ll find a glass towers
Inhabiting alongside a concrete jungle
Where dreams come to realize
They can become a reality
Let me share something more intimate
I appreciate the relationships I’ve made
Good, great, bad, and even broken ones
All of them have formed me in ways
Hitting the school books couldn’t
The good and great bonds have
Locked in my belief
That amazing people exist
That humanity has not been lost
Bittersweet though when my friends
Decide it’s time for us to get drunk
The bad and broken bonds have
Locked in my belief
That amazing people exist
That humanity has not been lost
Unfortunate when we
Are no longer friends
But I can’t leave any bonds
Broken or not
Behind
As people are not properties
People have rights
And I am not one to take rights away
For that makes it all wrong
I appreciate the people
Who I have never met
But are fighting for my safety
It doesn’t matter what I believe in
Or what my views of the government are
Politics aside
I live in a pretty fantastic country
Because at the end of the day
Someone has died for me to live in this city
Someone has died for me to eat a cupcake
Someone has died for the chance for us
To create our families
While they leave theirs at home
Knowing full well that a bullet
Will call their heads a home
I appreciate the teachers
Whose calling wasn’t math nor physics
Neither chemistry nor biology
Neither singing nor theater
Their calling was to inspire
To nurture those who’s calling
Were math or physics
Chemistry or biology
Singers or future actors/actresses
Majoring in not just a subject
Rather majoring in humanity itself
I appreciate this moment
This moment I am sharing with you
Because you are honoring my question
By thinking of an answer
Not just for me
But an answer for yourself
You have allowed me
To share my thoughts
Opinions and so far
Have respected my stance on life
And that is worth more
Than winning the Powerball
I appreciate the word itself
For it instills in a person their worth
It empowers positivity
That sends it racing through their veins
And into their hearts
My name is Matthew Nguyen
Some like to call me the One Peace Poet
And these are just
Some of the things I appreciate
What are yours?
